With Afghanistan’s tumultuous reputation deeply ingrained in our minds, it’s easy to forget that this has been a nation ravaged by war for decades. Potent reminders of these constant battles are to be found throughout this culturally rich country; one in particular was abandoned around a majestic backdrop of mountains, fertile valleys, and palaces – the Soviet tank ‘243’.

‘Tank 243’ has been stripped of all its useful materials. Only the shell and movable cannon remain. Laying in front of the abandoned tank and its firing line are the mud brick remnants of what may be a house. My guide speculated that the crumbling walls are a result of the tank’s offensive. Or perhaps the armoured vehicle was just a souvenir the Russians were forced to leave behind when they withdrew from the country.

Whatever the reason for its presence, it conveniently lurks behind one other impressive artifact – The Bagh-e Jehan Nama Palace. Built during the late 19th century by Amir Abdur Rahman, the palace and its associated gardens once played host to major social events. The swimming pool was a particular focal point; apparently a place where promiscuous frolics would ensue.

Nowadays the pool is murky and fly-infested, and the palace itself is occupied by the Afghan government. But tourists are free to visit the site, which still retains a charm and offers spectacular views despite having been neglected and renovated several times over the course of a hundred years.

Bagh-e Jehan Nama Palace and the abandoned Soviet tank are located near the town of Kholm (formerly Tashkurgan), around 60 km east of the major city of Mazar-I-Sharif.
