This Heinkel He 111 bomber of Germany’s Luftwaffe is pictured here after being downed in England during World War Two. The aircraft’s identity, and that of its crew, remains unclear. But the photograph is thought to have been taken in Sheffield during the 1940s.
The wrecked Heinkel could have been shot down by the aircraft of RAF Fighter Command, or one of thousands of anti-aircraft gun batteries located around Britain’s towns, cities and airfields. Either way its fate remains a mystery, though it seems likely that the crashed bomber was melted down to provide fresh aluminium for Britain’s own aircraft manufacturing.
