It may have been one of the most successful and formidable fighter jets of the 20th century, not to mention the star of Top Gun, but stripped of its weapons systems, avionics, engines and other equipment, this tired Grumman F-14 Tomcat hulk is no match for the mechanical arm of the digger that’s been tasked with tearing it apart.

A handful of Tomcats can be seen in museums today. But since the F-14’s retirement from US Navy service in 2006. the vast majority of the fleet has been scrapped to stop their parts falling into the hands of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force, which still operates them.

In a scene that will bring tears to the eyes of aviation enthusiasts worldwide, the gutted Tomcat shell, which would once have been worth around $38 million with all its systems fitted, is swiftly reduced to a few thousands dollars worth of scrap metal. It’s a poor quality video, but you get the idea.
