In 2003 this wrecked AH-64 Apache gunship is understood to have crashed on landing at Tactical Assembly Area SHELL in central Iraq. The formidable attack helicopter was assigned to A/Company 2-101st Aviation Regiment when it came down in the desert. The US Army gunship was one of various AH-64s deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The AH-64 Apache is one of the world’s most successful and fearsome attack helicopters. Originally manufactured by Hughes Helicopters and later McDonnell Douglas, the Apache is now built by Boeing. First flown in 1975 and introduced in 1986, the distinctive rotorcraft remains in production today.
